Bluetooth 3.0 will soon no longer be cutting edge as version 4.0 specification has just been confirmed. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (or SIG) has approved Bluetooth 4.0, making it’s arrival by the end of this year very possible, even though Bluetooth 3.0 still hasn’t received widespread acceptance.

One of the more impressive features of the new standard includes a low energy option that will allow Bluetooth enabled devices to be powered for several years on nothing more then a small battery no larger then a small coin battery. Some of the other features we can expect to see include:

• Ultra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption
• Ability to run for years on standard coin-cell batteries
• Low cost
• Multi-vendor interoperability
• Enhanced range

The ability to run Bluetooth on low-energy devices means that it can be used to connect small devices that have coin-sized, single batteries. These would be units that require long-living batteries, such as pedometers, watches and whole new range industrial, medical and in-home sensors.

“The finalization of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology within the Core Specification is a monumental achievement,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth SIG. “Bluetooth wireless technology can now, with the hard work of our members and our world-class qualification program, really do it all.”
